We are excited to continue the development of the City of Alhambra’s Historic Preservation Program!

The City is currently in Phase 3 of a three-phase project consisting of:

Phase 1: Historic Context Statement (complete)

The City worked with Historic Resources Group on Phase 1, the preparation of the City’s first comprehensive, citywide historic context statement.

Phase 2: Historic Resources Survey (complete)

The City worked with Historic Resources Group on Phase 2, the preparation of a citywide historic resources survey to identify properties and neighborhoods that may have potential historic significance.

Phase 3: Historic Preservation Ordinance (In Progress)

The City is working with Historic Resources Group to prepare a draft Historic Preservation Ordinance and also to establish a Historic Preservation Commission. As part of the development of a Historic Preservation Ordinance, there will be several opportunities for community members to provide input and feedback, including at community meetings and through a formal questionnaire. Final adoption of a Historic Preservation Ordinance will require review at noticed public hearings before the Historic Preservation Commission, Planning Commission, and ultimately, the City Council. Please visit the About page for additional information on the timeline.

Historic Preservation Ordinance

On September 26, 2024, the Draft Historic Preservation Ordinance was made available for review. The community is encouraged to review the draft document and to provide their input on the Ordinance.

The Historic Preservation Commission began their discussion and deliberation on the Draft Historic Preservation Ordinance at their Wednesday, December 4, 2024 special meeting and continued their discussion at their regular meetings on Wednesday, January 22, 2025 and Wednesday, February 26, 2025.

City staff and the consultant team, Historic Resources Group and Architectural Resources Group, are now working on revising the Draft Historic Preservation Ordinance based on the recommendations received from the Historic Preservation Commission. The Historic Preservation Commission held a public hearing at their Wednesday, May 28, 2025 regular meeting to make a formal recommendation to the Planning Commission and the City Council on the revised Historic Preservation Ordinance.

The revised Historic Preservation Ordinance will now move forward with a public hearing before the Planning Commission at their Monday, July 7, 2025 regular meeting, where they will make a formal recommendation on to the City Council.
